Aceh: Simeulue
At the eastern tip of Indonesia there is Simeulue. Over the past 10 years Simeulue has
become a growingly popular surf destination. Located 150 km (93 miles) off the west
coast of Sumatra, Simeulue was once a part of West Aceh Regency but became a separate
Regency in 1999. For wave hunters, this island provides multiple and consistent waves
all year long and still remains as one of surfing last frontiers.
The island holds around 100 km long of reef and coral surroundings, so there are plenty
of waves to be discovered. One of the most seek out wave in this island is known as The
Peak. It can handle 8 feet plus and features nice wall sections, hollow barrels and fun
air sections at the end. It is better suited for intermediate to experienced surfers,
however beginners can also learn on small swells located a few minutes away. Other
exiting surfing spots in Simeulue include: Monkey Trees, Dylan’s Right and Alus-Alus
Bay. Most surf spots are for intermediate to advanced surfers and all offer barrels.
